This year’s summit focuses on the nexus of housing, jobs, and transportation, and how Transit-Oriented Development is key to improving California’s quality-of-life.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With its mission to advance systems thinking and the Triple Bottom Line, the California Green Academy (“CalGreen”), and it's sustainable transport blog “TransportiCA,” are proud to report live from the tenth annual Norman Y. Mineta National Transportation Finance Summit (“Summit”), this Friday. Co-hosted by the renowned Mineta Transportation Institute (“MTI”) and the Commonwealth Club of California, this year’s theme is, “The Intersection between Transportation and Housing: Building Blocks to the Future,” focusing on how the successful integration of transit, jobs, and housing–a.k.a., Transit-Oriented Development (“TOD”)–provides equitable, healthy, and lasting social mobility. “TransportiCA is incredibly excited to report from the Summit, given the development of Senate Bill 50. We are also more than confident the Summit will provide the real solutions and equitable finance mechanisms and obligations, thoroughly addressing the State’s less-than-admirable efforts for affordable housing, quality jobs, and a robust, clean, and connected transit system,” said Greg Justice, TransportiCA founder, and CalGreen’s Chief Sustainability Officer. Moderated by retired Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta (U.S. DOT), the Summit’s keynote speaker is Therese McMillan, MCE, MCRP, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. The second half includes MTI’s annual national transportation finance survey and research findings, presented by Dr. Asha Agrawal–Director, MTI’s National Transportation Finance Center, followed by a panel discussion, featuring: Carl Guardino, President & CEO, Silicon Valley Leadership Group and Member, California Transportation Commission; Pedro Galvao, MPP, Senior Policy Manager, Nonprofit Housing Association of Northern California; Abigail Thorne-Lyman, MCP, TOD Program Manager, Strategic and Policy Planning Group, Bay Area Rapid Transit (all pictured above); moderated by Dr. Karen Philbrick, MTI’s Executive Director. The Summit takes place this Friday, 21 June, from 09:00-11:30, at the Commonwealth Club, conveniently located within walking distance (0.3 miles) of the Embarcadero BART and MUNI station. Attendance is free, but registration concludes at noon, Thursday, 20 June.
